Types of Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgery

Two types of minimally invasive surgery we offer at Eden Women’s Health are hysteroscopy and laparoscopy
What is Hysteroscopy?
Hysteroscopy is a procedure where a thin tube with a camera is inserted through the vagina into the uterus. This allows doctors to directly see inside the uterine cavity without a need for any incisions. This procedure is done as a day surgery procedure, where patients are able to discharge from the hospital on the same day as the procedure.
Hysteroscopy can help in (but not limited to):
- Diagnosis: Finding the cause of abnormal bleeding, irregular periods or infertility
- Treatment: Removing growths like polyps, fibroids or adhesions inside the uterus with minimal trauma to surrounding tissue
What is Laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy or key-hole surgery involves making small cuts in the abdomen to insert a tiny camera and surgical tools. This lets doctors visualise and treat complex issues in the pelvic area without large incisions. Laparoscopy is an inpatient procedure, requiring patients to stay at the hospital overnight for close observation by the medical team.
Laparoscopy can help in (but not limited to):
- Diagnosis:
- Checking for conditions like endometriosis or ovarian cysts
- Finding the cause of pelvic pain
- Treatment:
- Removing ovarian cysts or fibroids
- Removing the uterus
- Treating endometriosis
- Treating ectopic pregnancy
