Pap Smears

What is a Pap smear?
A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test, is a small and quick procedure performed during a pelvic examination. It helps in early detection of cervical cancer and precancerous cells in women, allowing for treatment to begin immediately.
A test for human papillomavirus (HPV), the leading cause for cervical cancer, is often done simultaneously for women over 30 years old.
What is done during a Pap smear?
During a Pap smear, our healthcare team will explain how the test will be carried out and when you are comfortable and consent to proceed:
- Insert a metal or plastic speculum into your vagina using some lubricant to allow for a clear view of your cervix. You may feel some pressure at the pelvic area.
- Use a soft brush or spatula to collect samples of your cervical cells. This usually is not painful, but you may experience some discomfort.
- Remove the speculum gently and leave you to get dressed.
The sample is then sent to a lab for examination under the microscope. Most women may feel a little discomfort but do not find the test painful.
When should I get a pap smear done?
Generally, women should get Pap smears at least once every 3 years from age 21-65 most after they have become sexually active. Certain factors like possessing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may require you to do Pap smears more frequently.
Do talk to a gynaecologist to find out how frequently you should be getting Pap smears.
How do I prepare for the Pap smear?
To get the most accurate and reliable results, we recommend you to:
- Try to schedule the Pap smear when you are not having your period. However, the test can still go ahead if your situation requires it. Speak to your healthcare provider to discuss the best possible time to take the test.
- Not to use tampons, vaginal creams, lubricants etc for 2 days before the test.
