Look out for these signs that you are going into labour when deciding when to leave for the hospital:

Normal signs of labour that require you to go to the labour ward:

  • Progressively more frequent and longer contractions: regular contractions occurring 4-5 min apart, lasting up to 60 sec long
  • Bloody show: leakage of pink discharge (consisting of small amounts of blood and mucous) from perineum
  • Water breaking: leakage of amniotic fluid from perineum

Abnormal signs of labour that require urgent medical attention:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Decreased fetal movements

Do contact your doctor if you have any doubts. If you have symptoms of labour before 37 weeks of gestation, please contact your healthcare provider early or attend your chosen hospital’s labour ward promptly.
